Heavy rainfall lashes Rajouri, disrupts normal life
Rajouri, Jul 10: Another spell of heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Rajouri district of Pir Panjal region on Friday, disrupting normal life and causing waterlogging in a number of areas. According to reports, the fresh phase of intense rainfall began during the late afternoon amid inclement weather and quickly spread across most parts of the border district. The downpour continued for over one-and-a-half hours, with heavy rain still being reported from several areas when the last reports were received. The high-intensity rainfall affected day-to-day activities, forcing many people to remain indoors with vehicular movement also slowed down on several roads due to reduced visibility and water accumulation. Waterlogging was reported from various localities, while several roads were inundated with rainwater, causing inconvenience to commuters and residents. Notably, this is the second spell of heavy rainfall to hit Rajouri within the last three days. A similar downpour had affected the district earlier this week, raising concerns over recurring weather-related disruptions during the ongoing monsoon season. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas and landslide-prone stretches, as the prevailing weather conditions may continue to pose risks. At least 25 villagers were rescued and shifted to safer places on Friday evening after flash flood hit Ari Sarhuti village of Mendhar in Poonch district after heavy rainfall in the area. Locals said that amid heavy shower, a huge volume of water descended from hill and entered human habitation damaging agriculture fields and entering the houses. They considered it to be an incident of flash flood after cloudburst in the area. Sub Divisional Police Officer Mendhar, DySP Tussif Rishu said that an information was received regarding the flood after which teams were mobilised and rescue was launched with the help of people from other villages also. He said that 25 people had been rescued during the operation and timely response averted any loss of life. Sub Divisional Magistrate Mendhar, Imran Rashid Kataria said that although there is no loss of life but damage to property is feared. "We have issue directions to field staff for immediate loss assessment in which loss of agriculture fields, grass fields and loss of structures will be examined," he said.
